After finishing work on Thursday, we picked up the rental car and headed north to the Galilee and Golan areas. It is such a change from the hustle of Jerusalem and it was great to have five days to just drive around and explore the beautiful national parks and see some of the less visited sites. We went as far as we could go in the north, to Mt. Hermon on the Syrian border but stayed each night at a B & B in Tiberias overlooking the Sea of Galilee.
The further north we drove, the more we saw the IDF presence and evidence of the fierce fighting that had taken place in the Golan Heights.
Gamla National Park - a story much like Masada of suicide rather than subjection to Rome.
Nazareth Village in the Arab city of Nazareth. YMCA has a first century re-creation that is so well done. None of the glitz of Hollywood but very authentic and educational. This is typical carpenter's shop.
A day visit to some of the old synagogues in Safed - another revealing and educational day. We did not know anything about Jewish mysticism until visiting this city - not that we know anything now - but we know it exists.
Now we are back at our apartment in Jerusalem and will be getting ready for Lane, Nancy, Reid and Melanie to arrive on Thursday. We'll leave Friday morning and head north to the Galilee for three days staying at the same B & B over looking the Sea and will have a special Shabbat dinner with the couple who owns the home. Saturday afternoon we will all be baptized in the Jordan River and Monday we will start trekking around Jerusalem - new and old city, Bethlehem, Dead Sea, Masada, Bethany, etc. I hope those kids can keep up with us.
